The weather’s been wonderful since yesterday and I’ve perked up quite a bit. My writing, the best thing I have, is coming along well. I go to the attic almost every morning to get the stale air out of my lungs. This morning when I went there, Peter was busy cleaning up. He finished quibkly and came over to where I was sitting on my favourite spot on the floor. The two of us looked out at the blue sky, the bare chestnut tree glistening with dew, the seagulls and other birds glinting with silver as they swooped through the air. and w?e w?ere so moved and entranced that we couldn’t speak. He stodd with his head against a thick beam, while 1 sat. We breathed in the air, looked outside and both felt that the spell shouldn’t be broken with words. We remained like this for a long wliile, and by the time he had to go to the loft to chop wood, I knew? he w?as a good, decent boy He climbed the ladder to the loft and 1 followed; during the fifteen minutes he was chopping w?ood, we didn't say a wrord either. 1 watched him from where I was standing and could see he w?ac obviously doing his best to chop the right way and show off his strength. But 1 also looked out of the open window, letting my eyes roam over a large pan of AmMi-rdniii. o\ei the rooftops and on to the horizon, a strip of blue so pale it was almost invisible. 'As long as this exist',.' 1 thought, 'this sunshine and this cloudless sky. and as long as 1 can enjoy it, how can 1 be sad?'
Unless \ on write \ on noli, you can’t know how wonderful it is I always u>ed to bemoan the fact that 1 couldn't draw7, but now I m overjoyed that at least 1 can write. And if! don’t have the talent to write hook'' or newspaper articles, 1 can always write lor myself. But I want to achieve more than that. 1 can’t imagine having to live like Mother, Mrs van Daan and all the women who go about their work and are then forgotten. 1 need to have something besides a husband and children to devote myself to! I don’t want to have lived in vain like most people, even those I’ve never met. 1 want to go on 0 living even after my death! And that’s why I’m so grateful to God tor having given me this gift, which 1 can use to develop myself and to express all that's inside me!

THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY I remember in all my life is the one on which my teacher, Anne Sullivan, came to me. It was three months before I was seven years old.

On the afternoon of that day, I knew that 5

something was happening. I went outside and waited on the steps of the house. I could feel the sun on my face and I could touch the leaves of the plants. Then I felt someone walking towards me. I thought it was my mother and she picked ю me up and held me close. This was my teacher who had come to teach all things to me and, above all, to love me.

The next morning, the teacher took me into her room and gave me a doll. When I was playing 15 with it, Miss Sullivan slowly spelled the word 'd-o-1-Г into my hand. I was interested and I imitated the movements with my fingers. I learned a lot of words like this, but only after my teacher had been with me for several weeks did I 20

understand that everything has a name.

One day, I didn't understand the difference between 'mug' and 'water'. I became angry and threw the doll on the floor. In my quiet, dark world I didn't feel sorry for doing it. Then my 25 teacher took me out into the warm sunshine. We walked down to the well where someone wTas drawing 'water.. My teacher put my hand under the wTater and spelled the word 'w-a-t-e-r' ' at the same time in my other hand. Suddenly, I 30 felt an understanding. The mystery of language was revealed to me. I knew then that 'w-a-t-e-r' was the wonderful cool something flowing over my hand. That living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, set it free! 35
