Introduction
Notes for Engineers in charge of Training, regarding Training Logs
With the elimination of Junior Engineer ranks in the present day system, the Fourth Engineer is generally inexperienced in respect to Skill and Technical Ability. The practical training of the Fourth Engineer is highly important at this stage to reach the caliber of Engineer suitable for promotion through the ranks. Technical Ability is a skill that cannot be just picked up from a textbook, it requires considerable practical experience.
The training should also encompass considerable Electrical work, on Vessels that do not carry Electricians the Third Engineer is often also the designated Electrical Engineer.
The Training Log comprises of an introduction, seven sections of tasks and a verification sheet. Each section having blank spaces where Senior Officers who feel additional tasks are beneficial or prudent for vessel type, may enter these tasks. Should there be insufficient space, additional tasks may be entered on the Additional / Miscellaneous Tasks sheet.
Familiarization - It is important that Engineers operate within a set of rules and maintain a high level of discipline. This can be achieved by following Standing Orders and the Safety Management System. It is also very important to be familiar with the surrounding safety equipment and features.
Engineering Knowledge - Although the Fourth Engineer may have recently completed a college course and is fully conversant with the theoretical side of Engineering, this section aims to test this with respect to the areas under their responsibility.
Technical Ability - This is the largest section and aims to cover a wide range of technical skills, which will be required throughout an Engineering Career.
Operations and Shipboard Management - This section aims to introduce the Fourth Engineer to the day to day running of the Vessel.
Paperwork ~ It has now become a very important aspect in the operation of the Vessel that the required paperwork is completed after the work has been earned out and adequate records are maintained. With the introduction of ISM, Vessels are required to have valid Safety Management Certificates onboard, the failure to qualify for this will stop the vessel trading in exactly the same manner as a Main Engine failure.
Additional Miscellaneous - Senior Officers are encouraged to enter additional tasks in this section.
History - This section should list any involvement in major repairs, major overhauls, dry-dockings and extraordinary events. The completion of this section will help to judge experience gained. If this section is fully completed, additional sheets may be inserted.
